Sports Hall Vižmarje Brod

The new sports hall shapes the entrance section of the access to the existing school and better defines the school’s plaza. The hall stands apart from the school complex: there is an entrance platform in the middle, which also serves as a connection with the sports grounds. Between the entrance platform and the hall, there is an exterior auditorium – an open-air classroom. With its archetypal form and placement, the hall assumes the role of a “temple” holding authority over the complex. The scale is balanced owing to sinking the hall below ground level. Above-grade, the hall is built entirely in timber. The timber is employed in a strict modular order which is evident in the expression of both the exterior and the interior. The atmosphere is created by the repetition of carpentry elements and joints, applying the aesthetic of large timber structures of farm outbuildings such as the barn or the hayrack.
