The Pedestrian Bridge across the River Rinža
The footbridge across the Rinža River is experienced as a highlight and focal point of the Gaj sports park area before the river enters the centre of Kočevje. The footbridge spans in a long elegant curve, passing over two existing supports and gently rests on the riverbanks. The width and slope of the bridge reflect its use as a part of bike path, giving it a light and slender appearance in a way that surrounding landscape is preserved and enhanced.
The choice of materials and construction responds to the spatial and cultural context of the location. Simplicity is found in the local selection of the material and its vernacular use. The footbridge is made of wood: two composite load-bearing arches constructed from laminated timber girders, serving also as railing, which are protected on both sides with a textured wooden cladding. The construction of the footbridge was incredibly cost-effective. Such design approach and use of the material could serve as a kind of template for bridging watercourses.
